Fring Stone House

The design juxtaposed the traditional Carr stone with 'Knapped' flint and cobbles

We were appointed in June 2022 to bring a new lease of life to an existing historic 19th century estate worker's cottage in Fring,West Norfolk. The charming cottage is constructed from Carr stone, characteristic of the region. We proposed an extension that would complement the historic character of the cottage but also embrace contemporary ecological and vernacular principles. The design juxtaposed the traditional Carr stone with 'Knapped' flint and cobbles on the extension, another vernacular material. In contrast to the restrained sash windows in the original cottage, the extension has large timber windows and doors to frame the woodland views beyond and flood the living space with light. Crisp, machined steel reveals frame these generous openings and provide a clean edge to retain the roughly hewn cobble work, combining the best of old and contemporary craftsmanship.
